Videos: Ugly Duckling – I Won’t Let it Die

Look for more consolidated music video posts in the future.

I do this for me as much as I do to show other people. When I was compiling the 2009 Music Video Award, I realized that I just wan’t on my music video game. This year, I made a pledge to step my shit up.

Here is a video from one of my favorite groups and subject of our only Men of the HALF HOUR (along with the Grouch), Ugly Duckling. I didn’t like Audacity too much as an album, nor did I like Bank for the Buck, but their first three albums were killer!

Video: P.O.S. – Never Better

P.O.S.’s debut album, Audition, was pretty good. He has a long way to go flow-wise, but the dude has personality. I especially liked “De La Souls,” which is a re-work of De La Souls “I Am.” His new album, Never Better is dropping soon on Rhymesayers Entertainment.

Here is the video for Drumroll, which is up there with Exile as one of my favorite videos of the year thus far.

Hip Hop Around the Internet #2

When he’s not being arrested for murder and having his girlfriend snitch on him, Max B. attempts to drop knowledge on Black History in his native Harlem:

DX: Being that you’re a musician from Harlem, what, in your opinion, did the Harlem Renaissance do for young artists such as yourself?

Max B: Well you know man, who you consider renaissance from Harlem? Bumpy Johnson? Rich Porter? Who you talking about? What kind of renaissance men you talking about?

DX: As far as the movement they had in Harlem with the black artists making a come-up and a name for themselves like Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday.

Max B: That sounds political man, that sounds like some 125th Street shit, some black-power shit, my nigga. I ain’t into all that. I just spent [$20,000] on a studio, I got two cribs, I’m about to get a new car and I’m about to put my shit in perspective for real. Shit’s about to get crazy for ‘09, man. So I ain’t really paying attention to the black power, 125th street shit, man. I only go over there to get $300 skullies. I don’t know nothing about the politics.

If you do a simple search, Max B. has some funny, hood-fabulous videos out there. I just don’t feel like posting them.

Onto some positive Black History:

Strong Arm Steady feat. Chace Infinite, Planet Asia & Affion Crockett – “Black History” from tunji balogun on Vimeo.

I don’t understand how Phil da Agony has had a sustainable rap career. I just can’t see how someone could hear one his verses and be like, “WOW that was dope!” Dude doesn’t even really rhyme!

Yes, The Roots are going to be the backing band for Late Night with Jimmie Fallon starting March 2nd. Here goes Jimmie giving a little intro of what is to come:

I don’t understand all the hate behind The Roots decision to back Fallon. They have spent the last 10+ years on the road 300+ days a year, why not take a break? These men have families for crying out loud!

I don’t have a problem with Fallon, either. When he first got the show I was flabbergasted because I confused him with the guy who did Corky Ramano (Chris Kattan). That dude is just obnoxious.

Anticipation: Cam’Ron – Crime Pays

cam-april-xxl-cover

We love Cam’Ron on this show.

It was disheartening when hip hop media outlets were reporting that he had gone M.I.A. amidst the cold war beef between former fellow Dipset members Juelz Santana and Jim Jones. These guys wouldn’t even with him as he went toe to toe with Curtis Jackson!

All that aside, the man with the pink chinchilla is back. Here goes an interview with Miss Info updating his whereabouts and status with Dipset:

His first street single is called “I Hate My Job:”

Dude seems to be doing pretty well for himself. He is even planning a sitcom, which is supposed to be like the Black version of “Curb Your Enthusiam:”

The Harlem MC is apparently a huge fan of David’s hit HBO series. Calling it his favorite show, he said, “I got a sitcom coming out but we don’t have a title exactly to it yet. It’s like black ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.’”

Staying true to Curb’s unique brand of Jewish humor, Cam – who once had a DVD in the works called “Here’s Cam’ron (You Little Yentas)” – says that he wants to include Jewish people in the project. “Right now while I’m writing my show, it’s a lot of stuff that has to do with Jewish people,” he said. “So I called my lawyer, my man Andrew Bergman, and I’m like listen, would I be allowed to do this because I don’t wanna offend anybody.”

Dude is switching it up a little here. I wonder if this album will be more conceptual. Like, I Hate My Job being the reason for descent into a world where Crime Pays.

I guess we’ll soon find out…

Cam’Ron’s sixth studio album, Crime Pays, will be released in April through Asylum Records.

Hip Hop’s Cast of Goons

Hip hop is such a fucked up environment that there are “rappers” that are more known for brute thuggery. Yeah, chalk this one up to embarrassing moments in African-American history, but some of these guys are plain entertaining. Have you ever heard an interview with Tony Yayo? At least one chuckle guaranteed. Or how about Uncle Murda? I can’t say I’ve ever heard a song from dude, but I did hear that interview where he admitted to having shot a few hot ones at the five-o.

Are these guys the equivalent of hockey enforcers? They generally have very little song-making ability, but their antics are what makes us love (love to hate?) them.

Anyways, check out the article at The Smoking Section.

Super Bowl 43 Thoughts

Yes, this is a hip hop blog, but it’s made by Steelers fans who live in Pittsburgh, so let’s put down the “jungle music” (copywright, my Dad) for a little while and talk some football.

Wow, what a Super Bowl. Last year was a great game, but this year really outdid it. I am obviously biased, though.

I will always remember the feeling of let down I experienced after Larry Fitzgerald scored that touchdown:

Larry went to Pitt and I am a Pitt dude, but seriously, fuck him. Fuck Steve Breaston, too. Over the past few days, there have been all of these people saying, “I am glad the Steelers won, but I am also glad Fitz played well.” Who cares? He is a great player, but once he graduated I stopped caring for him.

“No… no… hell no!”

By the same token, I will never forget the ELATION after Santonio caught that pass in the end zone.

Big Ben had some BALLS to even throw that pass. WOW, just amazing. On Letterman he talked about how he was SURE that the pass was intercepted, but Holmes somehow managed to do the impossible.

James Harrison seriously scares me as a person.

I don’t know what Francisco did to warrant this, but here in Pittsburgh we were like, “WOW!” We were amazed and shocked for a moment. Then a after the shock wore down, it was more like: “Well Harrison, if you thought he deserved it then he probably did.

Just like when he BODYSLAMMED this Browns Fan.

You just don’t FUCK with Harrison!

On a more positive Harrison note, here is the 100 Yard Touchdown:

Most people don’t talk about the GREAT block from Lamar Woodley at the end that enabled Harrison to get the touchdown. If he hadn’t done that, the half would have been over and the Steelers would have had a chance to even try for a touchdown.

All in all, one of the best games I have ever seen. I am glad to have had the opportunity to see it. As my friend Laura S. told me, “My President is black, my head coach too!” It’s even more funny because she is a white.

My man Chris McCabe took some GREAT photos at the parade yesterday (2/4/09). Check out his flickr account! He should go professional.

Oh, and direct any more discussion to the thread on the forum.
